Understanding the Different Types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Advanced Treatment Options for Better Patient Care

Types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a term for chronic inflammatory conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Our team, led by Dr. and Dr. Indraneel Chakrabarty, specializes in achieving successful outcomes for patients through advanced research and cutting-edge treatments. The two main types of IBD include:

Crohn’s Disease:

Can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus. It typically involves deep inflammation that may penetrate multiple layers of the bowel wall and cause complications such as strictures, fistulas, and abscesses.

Ulcerative Colitis:

Primarily affects the colon and rectum, causing continuous inflammation of the innermost lining of the large intestine. It often leads to symptoms such as bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and urgency.

Microscopic Colitis:

A less common form of IBD, including lymphocytic and collagenous colitis, which cause chronic watery diarrhea due to inflammation in the colon.

Indeterminate Colitis:

When it is difficult to distinguish between Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, the condition may be classified as indeterminate colitis until further diagnosis can be made.
